Subwoofers Although people tend to associate subwoofers primarily with home theater, the truth is that almost any system--even a strictly stereo music system--can benefit from having one. A subwoofer can enable you to use small main speakers without sacrificing output capability or frequency range. Or it can extend the range and enhance the output capability of large speakers. And in either case, a subwoofer can make it easier to achieve smooth low-frequency response. At least, a good subwoofer can do all these things. A mediocre one most likely will succeed only in adding some ill-defined whomp to the sound.
